We Love To Play!

The Spartanburg Community Band is a concert band made up of mostly amateur musicians from Spartanburg, SC and surrounding areas. The Community Band was founded in 1996 to serve two purposes:

1) to provide an opportunity for area musicians to continue performing after graduating from school

2) to provide free live music performances to the community.

The Community Band and its affiliated jazz band, the Spartanburg Jazz Ensemble, perform for various public events in and around Spartanburg, SC.  Our venues include the Red, White and Boom July 4th celebration and Dickens of a Christmas.  Our Ice Cream Sundays Summer Concert Series, formerly held on the USC-Upstate  campus but moving to Converse College, is an especially popular family oriented concert.

Mr. John Holloway directs the Concert band and Dr. Thomas J. Wright is the Jazz Ensemble Director. The Concert Band rehearses at the Spartanburg Day School [directions], Tuesday evenings from 7:00-9:00 p.m. The Jazz Ensemble rehearses Sunday evenings at USC-Upstate. Both bands maintain e-mail groups at Yahoo! Groups so that members can receive rehearsal reminders and keep in touch (see links). Membership is extended to qualified musicians without regard to race, color, creed, gender, or how long it has been since you played in high school.

Spartanburg Community Band is a tax-exempt organization chartered under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code. We are financed by donations from members and friends, including corporate sponsors and a grant from the SC Arts Commission, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
